The Jeffersons was a show that admittedly I seldom watched. The theme song, for me, was the best part of the whole show.
The Jeffersons sprang from “All In the Family”, a 70s sitcom that pushed the edge of the envelope with regard to what you could say on TV, then and now. George Jefferson was Archie’s neighbor and had the same idea towards white people that Archie had towards black people. I will admit that my reasons for not liking the Jeffersons was most likely my age. Being a young kiddo, I didn’t grasp the satire within the writing and I only say a bunch of people yelling at each other (the same went for “All In the Family”). The Jeffersons ran their course and had a big following, but for me, the theme song will always be the shining thing I remember about the show.
Lyrics:
Well we’re movin on up, to the east side.
To a deluxe apartment in the sky.
Movin on up to the east side.
We finally got a piece of the pie.
Fish don’t fry in the kitchen;
Beans don’t burn on the grill.
Took a whole lotta tryin’ just to get up that hill.
Now we’re up in the big leagues
Gettin’ our turn at bat.
As long as we live, it’s you and me baby
There ain’t nothin wrong with that.
Well we’re movin on up, to the East Side.
To a deluxe apartment in the sky.
Movin on up to the east side.
We finally got a piece of the pie.
