I’ll Fly Away is an old Hymn that, I’ll admit, I didn’t like, that was until I heard Big Smith tear it up!
I’ll Fly Away is a tune that I’ve heard many, many,…many times at funerals and by old churches with old people with one foot in the grave. Before Big Smith, it seemed like a dirge, so when I heard a local Missouri Bluegrass band being this tune, I rolled my eyes, gritted my teeth and prepared to endure. Sure enough, it started just like all the other times I’ve heard it played over a casket, but it was after the first verse going into the refrain that it kicked up a notch,…to “11” I would say. Big Smith really brought new life into a sagging song and because of that, their version is the one I think about when I sing this under the overpass.
Only 41 days left…
Lyrics:
Some glad morning when this life is o’er,
I’ll fly away;
To a home on God’s celestial shore,
I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away).
I’ll fly away, fly away, Oh Glory
I’ll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away).
When the shadows of this life have gone,
I’ll fly away;
Like a bird from prison bars has flown,
I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away)
I’ll fly away, Oh Glory
I’ll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away).
——-Instrumental———–
Oh. How glad and happy when we meet
I’ll fly away
No more cold iron shackles on my feet
I’ll fly away
I’ll fly away, fly away Oh Glory
I’ll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die Hallelujah, by and by
I’ll fly away.
Just a few more weary days and then,
I’ll fly away;
To a land where joy shall never end,
I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away)
I’ll fly away, fly away Oh Glory
I’ll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away).
