I’ve Been Working On the Railroad, a performance inspired by a hologram aboard a starship in the delta quadrant.
I’ve Been Working On the Railroad, sure, it’s a nursery rhyme put to music, but it was also the song the holographic (photonic) doctor (now named “Joe”) sang to the rather short and annoying aliens in the episode “Virtuose” in season 6. The story opens as the starship Voyager lends aid to an alien vessel in distress. As they are treated in sickbay, this species has never heard music and are enchanted as the EMH (Emergency Medical Hologram) sings “I’ve Been Working On the Railroad”. This makes the doctor a star to an entire planet. While his ego gets expanded, he thinks of resigning his commission and staying on the planet to become a star, but the annoying, short alien species loses interest quickly. The show closes as the doctor is back in sickbay, happy to return to his duties, lightly singing the song that started the whole mess.
